Govt trying to clamp down on dissent: pan-dems

The pro-democracy camp on Tuesday denounced the re-sentencing of more than a dozen activists who tried to storm Legco as “political persecution”. They accused the government of trying to silence or suppress those who protest against injustice in society, but said they are determined to continue their fight. Land Justice League lawmaker Chu Hoi-dick said the decision of the government to review the sentences and to exaggerate the seriousness of the case was to force the immediate jailing of the activists. He also was critical of the court’s approach. “The Court of Appeal should not be looking at the facts and details. It should only focus on the judgement of the magistrate,” he said.
