Around 20 lawmakers in Taiwan have formed an alliance to support calls for democracy in Hong Kong.

The group is led by Huang Kuo-chang, the chairman of Taiwan’s pro-independence New Power Party, and includes lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

Huang said Hong Kong and Taiwan face similar difficulties in areas like housing shortage and youth development, and the new “Taiwan Congressional Hong Kong Caucus” will be a good platform for exchanging policy ideas.

He added that he understands Hong Kong has come under intense pressure from Beijing in its quest for democracy, and hopes Taiwan can give the SAR more support in this regard.

The group’s launch on Monday was attended by Hong Kong lawmakers and activists, including Nathan Law, Joshua Wong, Alex Chow, Chu Hoi-dick and Raymond Chan.
